Looks as though when I make something yellow, it has to be gingham and flouncy. First, I made this yellow gingham top with some flouncy sleeves back in May an now this flirty little number.
I first saw this dress made up by Rosyย where she added a long flounce to the bottom of hers and I loved it.ย Butterick 6453ย is one of Gertie’s patterns that I wasn’t immediately drawn to but after seeing Rosy’s, and other versions, I thought I’d give it a try. I cut out my usual size but thought that I may need a little more length in the bodice…I was wrong. I didn’t need the 1/2 inch that I added as you can see in the photos…
The rear view….oh it would be such a good fit, if not for my needless alteration. Those little wrinkles across the bodice drive me a bit nuts but not enough to take it apart and redo…..let’s be real.
The fabric is interesting. It’s hard to tell from the pictures but it is a sheer windowpane polyester. Where you see the white, is actually the underlining. It doesn’t have any stretch…no secret pajamas here!
To add a bit more interest and fun, I cut five inches off the bottom and replaced it with a pleated flounce. I had originally basted a second layer above this one but removed it. I thought that it was too much but after seeing these pictures, I’m considering putting it back on.
Gosh, this is pretty Margo! I love it as is with the single flounce! If you do add a second one on…please share with us!
Thanks Sue!
This is gorgeous and a perfect summer dress! BTW, I really like just the one ruffle.
Two ruffles may be a little too much. Thank you Carolyn!
I like your version. Others write that they’ve struggled with the fit – with the sizing being on the large side. Whereas the fit on yours looks good. I especially like the flash of bright yellow in the little hem pleats, where the fabric colour is not muted by the lining.
Thank you Karey! Luckily for me I tend to be able to make up patterns as is with little to no alterations. But I sometimes have to add a little extra to the hips. I didn’t have to do that this time. And obviously I didn’t need to add any length to the bodice either.
Love, love, love!
This style of dress looks fabulous on you. It would be beautiful in black or red ( actually in various colours and fabrics. ) and can be dressed up or down with accessories. I think you’ll make this again. ๐ Love the yellow gingham. The scenery is beautiful too. ๐
Thanks Almeda! It’s funny that you mention red…I have a nice red waiting for a dress. This could be the one.
Love this dress on you, the kick pleats make it so cute. I am 5ft and have to alter everything. How tall are you?
Thank you Debbie! I am about 5’7″.
Beautiful summery dress! That yellow is so lovely even in the bright sun (the true test of yellow for me ๐ Great fit and I like the single flounce too – but I’d have to see the second one on to judge fairly ๐
Thanks Kathleen! I have rarely worn yellow, yet this season I seem to be drawn to it.
You make the best dresses! Love the ruffle, and yellow is a great color for you and looks pretty stunning against the blue water.
Awwwwe! Thank you Kelly! You’re so sweet.
I love your dress and think yellow is a great color for you!
When I used to be blonde I wouldn’t wear yellow…now I learning what yellows I can wear. It’s nice to know that there are some that I can wear. ๐ Thanks Faye!!
What a cute and cheerful summer dress. Enjoy wearing it. Abbey
It’s fun to wear and I have a wedding coming up that I may wear it to. Thank you Abbey!!
This is stunning! It looks casual enough to wear easily yet so elegant too. Another great make!
Thanks!
Such a fun flirty frock! The fit is immense and never mind those wrinkles!
This dress is the epitome of feminine…just gorgeous! Is it comfortable to wear, as the fabric appears to be woven?
ALWAYS so lovely! You’re a ray of sunshine (I’m sure I’m repeating what someone has already said!)
This dress is beautiful! I just love the cheerful sunshine yellow.
This dress is so pretty Margo. Love yellow gingham and the dress fit โค
I think it looks great on you. Lovely as always.
