Look who’s sewing with knits again! I am slowly becoming more comfortable with them…and it’s always more motivating to persevere when it’s a comfy dress in the prettiest blue. The fabric is a rayon spandex…it’s spongy and soft. Perfect for warm summer weather and easy to pull on and go.
When the new McCall patterns for summer came out, I was drawn to M7591 instantly but I was hesitant when I saw that it was for knits. I’m glad now that I didn’t give up on it. It is a fitted dress with lined bodice and elastic waist and varied lengths. I choose view C with the full back, faux wrap with keyhole bodice and shorter length.
I made my usual size but found that the bodice was a bit too big. I’m not sure if this was due to the pattern or if the knit was stretching a little too much. I had to take in the bodice sides about an inch to get a better fit. If I had it over, I would have taken the shoulder seams in a half inch as well but I didn’t realize this until I already had the skirt attached and elastic inserted. I started to unpick it but the stitches are quite deep and I was tearing holes in the fabric. So I decided to live with the fit as it is.
I like the full back…no need for special undergarments.
I like the keyhole front but I find it a little too revealing and so next time I would deepen the crossover by an inch for more coverage.
Overall, this is a great staple in my wardrobe, one I would make again. It has the wear ability of a basic dress but with the little extra elements to make it special.
It’s lovely! That’s such a great blue – i’ve been eyeing this pattern (I know! Me and a Big 4 pattern?) and wondering how to hack it from a Comino Cap! 😉
Thanks Gillian! You may be eyeing it but of course you will hack it!! Love that!
It’s so pretty and I love the shade of blue! It’s a great dress so definitely make more!
Thank you Carolyn! It is a gorgeous color…I couldn’t resist.
I was drawn to this pattern, too! But didn’t take the plunge. I like the cross over, and yes, it’s a bonus that the full back means a regular bra is an option! The other view is so fun, but a strapless bra in summer is not all that inviting… And a lovely colour on you.
Thanks Chloe! I still may try the other version, it is pretty cute.
Very pretty!
Aww thank you faye.
Lovely! That shade of blue is just gorgeous on you!
Thanks Meg!
The dress looks really nice on you! I love your use of colour in your dresses.
Thanks so much Anne! It’s not secret that blue is my favorite color. 🙂
love it, very pretty and that color is fantastic. I made a dress from rayon knit a couple of years ago that I have re-hemmed twice ! as it keeps stretching, so I think these rayon knits are very stretchy . although I don’t quite know how to take that into consideration when sewing 🙂
Yeah…I love a rayon knit but the stretch! After I posted this dress, I took another look at the pattern and realized that it can be made with a woven. I plan to do that and I’ll see the difference then. Thanks Beth!
Very pretty dress! I find that with McCall’s knit patterns, they are always too big! And rayon spandex knit has to be the best invention since sliced bread.
I don’t usually have that problem except this time….oh well. I do love the soft comfy feel of the rayon knit though!!! Thanks Regan!
It’s beautiful and I think the fit looks fine to me. Oh, the color is so gorgeous, just gorgeous!
Thank you Tomasa!
Very pretty! That blue is perfect on you.
Thanks Irene!!
Such a pretty blue and I love that keyhole neckline.
Thanks Andrea!!
As ever, you’ve made a beautiful dress. That shade of blue is my favourite!
This blue would look fabulous on you Philippa so I can see why it’s your favorite. Thanks!!
Very lovely Margo! What a gorgeous shade of blue!:) You seem to be doing great with knits!! I’m in the midst of a McCalls 6886 pattern hack using three shades of french terry. Its the first time I’m really kicking myself for not learning how to use a serger:p Bah! You’ll understand once I’m done, lol:) P.S, one can not have too many beautiful summer dresses! Keep them coming;)
Thanks Rikki! The thing with sergers….read your manual and don’t be afraid of it! You be the boss! LOL
I love this colour on you! Great dress 🙂
Thanks Helen!!
I want to make this, and have it ready to cut out, but I’ve seen a few others make it and they mention how low the armholes are. Did you have that problem? Was it remedied by you taking in the side seams?
The bodice on this was too bug for me and yes the armholes were too low…taking it in at the sides did help but if I had it over I should’ve taken the shoulders up as well. I’m going to try it in a woven to see if my fabric’s stretch was to blame and not the pattern. We will see….
