Dresses dresses and more dresses…. hope you guys don’t get too tired of them. But I can’t help myself…I have intentions of making other garments. I even buy patterns for them. Like M7602, a cute peplum style top.Β Cute right?!
As I’m choosing my fabric, I’m thinking about what I will pair this top with….shorts, a skirt, or jeans? I can’t help thinking …”this would be so great as a dress, then I wouldn’t have to consider what to wear with it.”. I’m a fan of “one garment and go”.
So of course, I drafted….and I use that term VERY loosely…. a skirt from the peplum part of the top. I basically decided on a length and made it longer. I think it worked out quite nicely!
Because of my last minute decision to make a dress, I didn’t have enough fabric to indulge in some pattern matching in the back. No big deal.
I added a bias trim to the ruffle. I love how it defines the ruffle and breaks up the floral. If you decide to add this detail, sew it on the ruffle before sewing the bodice together because the ruffle is sewn in the armscyce seam. I also used the same black bias for the straps…I really like the contrast.
The fabric is a floral stretch cotton…it has just a teensy amount of stretch. Check out my corsage…the only thought about pattern placement was putting that flower on my left lapel. A little cheesy? Maybe, but I love me some cheese.
The pattern was pretty straight forward even with my changes. I did shorten the straps…I often have to do this. I am pleased that the neckline wasn’t too low…but of course I decided to hand stitch the bodice down where it crosses over…just for security and comfort. I also opted for an invisible zip over a lapped…I always do.
I think if I made this pattern again, I would make my dress version. I feel like it just suits it. It would also look cute with a pencil skirt like the one from B6453.
So there you have it, another pretty dress. If I keep this up, I’m going to have to open up shop and sell these things off…I’m running out of closet space and Husband is giving me some side eye…can you buy drops for side eyeicitis?
Beautiful dress Margo. You have such great vision – your changes and details add so much to your new summer dress. Love the fabric. I think this one will be packed in your suitcase for your next winter getaway down south. π
Thank you Almeda! It would be a perfect dress for down south!
Very pretty dress! I like the corsage effect too π
Thanks Kelly!!
such a pretty dress, great fabric. I would never have thought dress instead of top by looking at that pattern – you worked it out perfectly.
Thank you Beth! It’s so nice when an idea works out!
LOVE! I didn’t even write this pattern down on my list to get because I felt “meh” about it. Nope, now it’s going on the list. Will cop TODAY
I could totally see this top on you! So got get it! Thanks Tasha!
Beautiful dress. If I saw that fabric online, I would think that such a large print would be useful for covering a couch, but certainly not a dress. WRONG! This dress is gorgeous, and good for you for going for it. I’m rethinking prints. and thank you for stating what kind of fabric you used.
Thanks Katydid!I even like using drapery fabrics for dresses too!
So cute! Love the fabric you choose! Dresses are so comfortable in the summer, why not have alot….
Agreed!! Thanks Wendy!
Very very pretty!
I love that you lengthened it and made it dress version. So pretty and definitely make another one.
I totally understand your dress. I’m on the ‘one garment and go’ camp as well.
I love this version, I didn’t see this as a possibility in the pattern. I like it more than the peplum version.
Your dress is just beautiful and I love the floral fabric, your attention to detail is spot on with the bias tape finish thanks sew much for the inspiration. Looking forward to your next creation.
Thank you Jerilyn!
Your dress is beautiful! Never thought about adding a ruffle or putting bias tape on a ruffle.
As for side eye….. Once my husband discovered there are patterns for men’s clothes and I was willing to make him shirts, scrubs, pj’s and boxers, he loved going to fabric stores. He buys way more fabric than I do.
Thanks Deb! That’s great that your hubby loves the fabric store too!
I do the reverse lol. Turn dresses into (flat) peplum tops by folding out the skirt waist darts & spreading ever so slightly.
That’s the great thing about sewing…we can make anything we want!
Beautiful dress. I love the black trim along the ruffle and the black straps. It adds such a nice touch.
Thanks Tomasa!!
GORGEOUS!! I love the bias tape addition to the ruffle. It’s just perfect!
Thanks! I think it would have been a bit boring without it.
This dress is stunning! I’ve just discovered your blog, your makes are all so gorgeous , and the layout is beautiful.
Absolutely love this dress. This pattern works so well as a dress, and so easy to have a complete outfit, rather than half an outfit, if you had just made it as a top.
Your dress is lovely! The fabric is perfect for this pattern!
Awesome dress!! Keep doing dresses! We love seeing them !! π
Thanks Evelyn, I doubt that I’ll be able to stop anyway! Lol
Beautiful blog and work, Margo! Nice to have learned about this and more officially met you today. We’ll be looking forward to your talk at the Guild!
Minh
It was great to meet you as well Minh! Hopefully, I’ll have something interesting to share! π
you look so lovely in all your dresses Margo. I never tire of seeing you make them π
Your dress is gorgeous! I really love the bias tape along the ruffle and straps! It really makes the ruffle stand out against this beautiful print. I’m getting ready to make this top for next spring and because my print would make it hard to see the ruffle, I am using your technique. Thanks for the great idea too.
