Happy New Year everyone! Christmas is now all packed away and like everyone else, I’m looking forward to a new year. I love new beginnings and goals….fitness goals, financial goals, personal growth etc… but when it comes to my sewing, this year I am going to ignore my thoughts about resolutions and goals. yikes! Yup. Let’s just wait and see what happens and where my wardrobes needs and more importantly, where creativity leads. I just want to keep sewing fun and enjoyable!
Here’s to blissful ignorance of sewing goals in 2016!
Butterick 6244 has been pretty popular these days. Eryn from Sew Style Me made an awesome sleeveless version in orange, I love the classic camel color of Lori’s of Girls In The Garden, and Frivolous At Last’s Lori’s plaid version is GORGEOUS! I made this red one back in early November and have worn it so much, I think I wore it for every Christmas shopping excursion I went on. It just seems to be a perfect addition to my wardrobe.
This pattern is a really good staple to have in your collection. The style is a loose one, so of course fit issues are minimal and it is a simple make….although…I did have some trouble with the darts but once I figured that out, I was fine. I couldn’t find a good explanation for this at the time but after looking for help on sewingpatternreview.com…to share with you and found a sewalong for this coat through Lori. Thanks Lori!! Go read about the front darts before you start…save yourself the trouble.
For my coat, I used a lightweight basket weave coating. When choosing a fabric for this pattern be sure that either both sides are the same or the wrong side is nice because it will show.

I love the RED! This is a great pattern. I sewed a grey version and wore it endlessly in the fall. I'd like to sew a sleeveless version to wear as a top layer during these cold months. Happy New Year and happy sewing!

Now you…the lady in red…you absolutely know your colours and silhouettes Margo! This is a stunning make! One thing, of many, that I'm learning from you is that sometimes patterns can be more simple construction-wise. I'd make it a sewing goal 2016…if I was doing that LOL…to really concentrate on making pieces that fit so seamlessly into my wardrobe, just like you do!

Ooh, I just made this! I struggled hardcore with the darts and found the sewalong really useful for that step.
As for goals, I'm repeating what I did last year: do whatever I want for a few months, then set some goals based on what I've gotten most interested in. It was nice to have part of the year for organic, creative exploration and then narrow in on things to feel accomplished about in the later part of the year.
I fully support your decision to do whatever you want and can't wait to see what you create. (Apparently what *I* want is to talk about myself endlessly in other people's comment sections…)
Beautiful, gorgeous coat, Margo! Another coat for your banister. 🙂 As a beginner sewer (with lots of dreams), I have to keep my goals fun and simple. My Christmas pillows were a hit with family and friends and now I am making my grand daughter a new bathrobe. Your coat looks tempting, thanks for the sewalong site. I may be in to look for this lightweight basket weave coating. Any red left? 🙂
