Over the holidays…way back during the Christmas holidays…. I made a few spiffy and fun things to wear and this dress was one of them. I didn’t have a black lace dress in my closet so I set out to find some interesting lace. That I did. It’s a little hard to describe this lace except to say that it is kind of “wooly”. Weird, I know. If you look closely at my pictures you may be able to see what I am talking about.
The texture is somewhat unrefined so I thought that I would pair it with a satin. Odd for me at anytime because I loathe satin. LOATHE I say! It’s shiny and wrinkly…yuck. I chose a grey satin…that looks more like a steely blue under the lace and I really think that it allows the lace to shine.
I choose McCalls 7085… the type of practical dress pattern that we should all have in our pattern stash. I both lined and underlined my dress with the satin. Instead of turning the hem, I decided to trim it around the lace design. This unrefined finish felt just right with the unrefined texture of the lace and gives the dress added interest.
My pattern matching certainly wasn’t on point for this dress but can we just marvel at what this wavy lace design does for the curves. Heeello! They hit in all the right places. Bonus!
Well…that’s two posts in one week for me. Very unusual, but I have a back log of makes that have yet to be posted and thought that it would be best to get this up before it is completely out of season.
Gorgeous, as always 🙂
Thank you Nilla.
That looks gorgeous on you. Great job! I love that fabric, too.
The fabric is a bit different…I’m so glad that it worked out. Thanks Carmen!
This dress looks amazing on you, it’s a great style. I have some lace sitting in the stash, waiting to do something with, I think a design like this would be great for it
This is a great pattern, I hope it works for you! Thank you Kaitlyn!
What a great dress and I love the pattern you chose for it.
Thank you Faye!
What a winner….and you look as always gorgeous!
Thank you Rianna!
Beautiful! Such great pairing of pattern with fabric. I also think the grey satin lining accentuates the design of the lace and I like the added feature of the hem. Another winner, Margo! A classy black dress!!! I had to chuckle at the difference in the background of this picture and your previous colorful foliage post. 🙂 Such fun to be able to create these beautiful clothes for all different occasions and locations.
It is quite a difference in backdrops! I would love to be back in that gorgeous warm weather again…oh well! You are right…it is fun to create clothes for different climates…seasons. Thanks Almeda!!
This is stunning Margo! I love the fabric combo and that lace is gorgeous! I love the hem – it’s perfect!
Thanks Heather!
Beautiful fit and shape…like the pattern was made for you!

I was just going to comment at how nicely your pattern matching looked. I think it looks great! Great pattern placement.
Thanks…I didn’t feel like it was the best matching but if you approve then I’m thrilled! I have seen your workmanship!
Margo – I just realized that you changed spots in the internet and I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you how wonderful your new place is! Lovely!
Thank you Carolyn, I like the WordPress format.
Well, I love your remodeled site and this dress, too. I just hopped over to your Instagram and saw a picture of you wearing (gasp) glasses! You are seriously adorable in glasses! Truly, you are.
Lol! Yes I now need glasses! Thanks Mindy, I’m glad you like the remodeled site, I felt like I needed a change.
