Can you see me? I was struck at how well I blend in with the background foliage in this dress! Very happy camo…I’ll wear any camo that blends in with a tropical background. yeah…that could be my game.
I tend to fall quickly in love with a fabric, okay, all fabric. But rayon has a special place in my heart and my stash. It is so cool and soft and drapey….pair that with the… almost watercolor, Monet-like print of this fabric, and I was in love.
For this dress, I used two patterns. I originally planned to make the the shorter view C dress of M6744 but after looking closer I swapped out the bodice for the jumpsuit bodice of M6083. I realize that the two bodices look very similar but sometimes it’s the little details that make all the difference. I noticed that the bodice of the dress had a good deal more gathers at the shoulders. After making V1344…which had a few too many gathers on the shoulders for my preference…I went with the jumpsuit bodice. I had made the jumpsuit before and I knew it would work perfectly. I was pleasantly surprised that even the notches matched up in the two patterns when I sewed the bodice to the skirt! Wahoo!
The skirt front consists of two pieces, overlapping each other. While wearing it, I was aware of it blowing open and showing a bit too much leg and tacked it closed to prevent this. Next time I would consider making the one piece front to avoid the possibility of flashing anyone!
Looking at the above picture, I can see that the arm holes appear to be too low. I didn’t feel that there was a problem when I wore this dress…but I may consider adjusting this next time.
The ease of this fabric combined with the easy casual vibe of the dress make for a great summer dress that I will go back to often.
I love this fabric. Rayon is fabulous isn’t it. I love that’s it’s usually opaque so there is no need for a lining.
Rayon really is one of my favorites too! Thanks Sarah!
I love this dress! It’s perfect. I need to make one. Thanks for the pattern combo idea.
Thanks Justine! The two patterns work perfectly together…such a bonus!
Agreed Margo. Seeing this tropical dress with it’s lovely saturated colours has brought a bit of sunshine into my morning!
Awww…thanks Philippa! Your comment brought a smile to my morning.
What a GORGEOUS spring dress Margo.
Thank you Faye!
Wow, fantastic Margo! It looks gorgeous on you! The print is stunning. I have a McCalls 6744 on the go now and was wondering if the built in ease would make rayon a suitable fabric for it. I see you combined the skirt with a different bodice. What do you think?
Rayon is definitely a great choice for 6744. I’m sure it will be lovely! Thanks Rikki!!
Stunning! What a fabulous dress and love the fabric!
Thank you Stevie! It’s great when a fabric and pattern..or two… work together so well.
Rayon is one of my favorites. A very pretty dress! Love the new blog design!
Thanks Shannon! Rayon is kinda the perfect fabric…

Thank you Hana, dresses are a staple in my summer wardrobe.
Lovely & fun dress! Looks so comfortable and breezy to wear. I also love rayon, esp in a good print.
Very breezy and comfortable! Thanks Noelle!
You may be wearing floral, but you’re no wallflower Margo! Your gorgeous dress sings summer to me! Just the other day I was saying how much I’m looking forward to sewing some new summer dresses, and here you are fueling me further! And looking absolutely beautiful while you do it! Thank you!!!
Thank you Sue. You always make cheery dresses…maybe they are just the ticket to turn the weather around. Can’t wait to see your summer creations!
That print and the colours are beautiful! What a great summery dress!
Rayon is so great, isn’t it!?
It’s a great little dress. I love this type of thing to throw on in the summer. LURV the fabric!
I intend to make more like this for just that reason! Easy to throw on. Thanks Amanda!
I love this dress on you, gorgeous.
Thank you Lori!!
Love your dress! Perfect for summer. Until I found on-line sewing friends I thought I was the only one who LOVED rayon! Especially for summer! Do you have a good source?
Thanks Roberta! Rayon is a dreamy fabric. I usually buy mine at my local Fabricville, they do have some nice prints in-store right now. I’m trying with all my might not to bring any more fabric home…but we’ll see!!
