Just For Fun

Summertime is funtime…amiright?! So sometimes I just go for it…kinda like this crazy jumpsuit…and make something just for the fun of it. Life is too short not to have some fun.
During one of my trips down the rabbit hole and time suck called Pinterest…I saw this top. (below) Pinned that baby in point. five. seconds. flat. Then made it up in almost the same amount of time.

bow sleeves

This dress is a tube of fabric with an elastic inserted in a casing at the top, hemmed at the bottom and ties sewn at each side seam. VERY SIMPLE.

It’s a cheater way to make a cold shoulder dress.

To make this cheater cold shoulder dress I cut out two rectangles using the following measurements:

Width= (Hip measurement / 2) + 4 inches

Length= measurement from high bust to desired length+ 3 inches ( 2 for casing at top and 1 inch for hem

For the ties I used the same fabric as the dress body but you could also use wide ribbon or trim.  My ties measured 58 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide.

The construction process is about as easy as it gets:

  1. Sew up side seams using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
  2. Fold down top of dress 1 inch and stitch down to create a casing for 3/4 inch elastic. Insert a length of elastic that feels comfortable to you and secure.
  3. Hem bottom of dress with 1 inch hem allowance.
  4. Mark center of the length of the tie and stitch it to the top of side seams at this mark.

Done!

My fabric choice was a floral chambray that I had in my stash.  I love the cool summery vibe it has. I also think this dress would be great in a flowing rayon…the ties would drape nicely as well…not as stiff as my very obvious bows. A rayon would be a little more chic…shrug…next time.

Summer is  a time for some fun and this dress was quick and fun to make and even more fun to wear!
